New Years Eve... by 9 p.m.

December 31, 2013
We celebrated New Years Eve with my good friend Nicole and her two girls. We were chatting yesterday at work about how neither of us had any plans for New Years Eve and decided we might as well have no where to go together.

So we planned an impromptu pizza party at her house. Jeff and I brought a salad and drinks, Nicole ordered the pizza and provided a few sweet treats. We were going to play a bunch of kid games we brought but when Pearl saw Gabby's Barbie collection, all games were out. Fern and Parker tormented each other because Cole was playing with all of "my toys!" It was funny... and a taste of his own medicine.

We ended the evening with a few minutes of the movie Land Before Time III or something like that. And then it was "Happy New Year!" and bed by 9 p.m.

A parent-perfect New Years.

Mustache scarf

December 30, 2013
Thanks Juanito Bandito for the new mustache scarf! I love it!

(And thanks to my hubby for buying it for me at the show!)

Hide the Lizard

December 29, 2013
I crawled into bed and felt a lizard under the sheets. Ahhh back to the old hiding spots again I thought to myself. I pulled the lizard out from under the fitted sheets and started to climb back in bed when I felt another one. Not totally unusual. But then they kept coming!!!!! Jeff burst out laughing and said he'd been waiting all day for me to find them. He'd gone to Zurcher's and bought a whole bunch of them... 18 and counting!

And as a side note, new lizards are much more glittery than the old ones.

Grandma's Rice Krispie teddy bears

December 28, 2013
I drove all over town looking for heart-shaped Red Hots and Reese's peanut butter dots (teeny, tiny chocolate and peanut butter dots) but to no avail.

So the Rice Krispie teddy bears aren't quite like Grandma's. But they are buttery, soft delicious memories of her.

Weirdo

December 27, 2013
Oh yes, she went to the store like this.

What a weirdo.

Puppy love

December 26, 2013
This is proof that some days my children are pretty much left up to their own devices for survival. I'm pretty sure this is the same shirt Cole wore for part of the day yesterday and then slept in. He probably hasn't eaten breakfast. Definitely hasn't brushed his teeth since... well, I'm not sure since when. And the only love and affection he's received is from the dog. Who has also determined the poor kid is practically orphaned and in need of a good scrubbing.

Gross.

Hide the Lizard Christmas Style

December 25, 2013
It appears my lizard friends and Santa are closer than I thought.

Grandmas don't mind messes

December 24, 2013
I am very grateful Grandmas don't mind sugar cookie messes. Unlike moms.

Otherwise Santa Claus wouldn't have a reason to make a stop at our house tonight.

Sugar Cookie Mess

December 23, 2013
This is why we only make sugar cookies a few times a year.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, has way too much fun.

Olaf

December 22, 2013
"Would you like to build a snowman?"

I'm sure we aren't the only ones with an Olaf in there front yard.

Boots

December 21, 2013
I bet you can't guess whose boots are whose.

Guilty lunch

December 20, 2013
Shhhhhh.

Don't tell my obesity prevention friends down the hallway what I'm eating for lunch.

Commuter special

December 19, 2013
This doesn't look good for my morning commute.

Buddy has a buddy

December 18, 2013
It looks like Buddy the Elf has a, well, a buddy.

Dentist appointments

December 17, 2013
I think my kids must be the only human beings on the planet who actually look forward to their dentist appointments.

They definitely do not get that from me.

Hide the Lizard

December 16, 2013
Jeff likes routine. And he's always finding new ways to improve his routine. Like laying out his clothes the night before. Or more recently, getting his bowl of cereal out and ready for some milk in the morning.

It makes me laugh.

I just hope he does the same when he sees that he has a little breakfast companion.

Cool down

December 15, 2013
I guess Blu got hot on our walk.

It's just a virus

December 14, 2013
I thought a few days at home would help Pearl feel well enough to go to Logan for the USU Cheer Clinic. She looks forward to this every year.

And every year she gets sick.

Last year, when I went to wake her up to go, the room smelled funny. When I looked at her closer, I could see barf in her hair and on her pajamas. Sweet. But that little pipsqueak cried and begged us to take her. So we did. She made it through the clinic, had a nap, and then performed at the game. Granted she didn't feel too good but nothing was going to stop her.

This year was a little different. She woke up and said she was ok to go. Just before we left she said her stomach hurt again but she wanted to try and make it. About 45 minutes into the clinic I walked over to check on her and she said she wanted to go home. That's when I knew something was wrong. She's a pretty tough cookie. I took her to the nearest Instacare thinking that maybe she had a bladder infection. It may be TMI but I used to get bladder infections a lot when I was her age and her symptoms were just how I remembered them.

Luckily we were the only ones in the Instacare so we didn't have to wait long. They ruled out strep throat and a bladder infection. But the way she was wincing when the doctor poked her stomach made them worry she might have appendicitis. She had a lot of the same symptoms. So they said they needed to do a blood test.

That did NOT go down well with Pearl. She is terrified and I mean TERRIFIED of needles. It didn't help that I had told her she wouldn't need a shot either. When that poor phlebotomist came in and Pearl saw her box of supplies she FREAKED out! Screaming and crying! The nurse who was helping figured I was one of those moms who was going to be as upset as her child. Nope. I'm heartless. And a new favorite of that nurse. I practically laid on top of Pearl and told the phlebotomist to just "stick her." I'm not sure Pearl will ever forgive me but that nurse told me after, "I like you... you're kinda mean like me." With a wink.

A pink bandage and Popsicle later and Pearl had stopped crying. The blood tests showed she had a high white blood cell count so something was bugging her. With those results, the doctor told us to go up to the hospital and have an ultrasound to rule out her appendix. Not the diagnosis I wanted to hear. Jeff met us at the hospital and we checked in. And waited. And waited. And waited. For three hours. To say Jeff was less than pleased would be an understatement.

And the diagnosis after that wait (and bill)? Nada. Nothing. Healthy appendix.

Apparently Pearl is fairly healthy. The nasty viruses going around haven't taken full effect on her like most of the other kids the doctors have seen. It's just going to be a slow, long drawn out process to a full recovery.

Sickos

December 13, 2013
We've been home the past couple of days sick. Pearl keeps complaining that her stomach hurts and she has a headache. And Cole has been coughing.

So we laid around on my bed all afternoon watching cartoons.

Free Doughnuts

December 12, 2013
The 45 minute wait with a little boy who was coughing so hard that I thought he was going to throw up or pee his pants was NOT worth a dozen doughnuts. Even if they were free.

Hide the Lizard

December 11, 2013
Two can play at this game, Jeff.

(Thanks to one of Jeff's coworkers for helping me hide the lizard in his office!)

Apples

December 10, 2013
I find it quite amusing how Fern eats an apple. He always eats two sides right down to the core and then happily says he's done.

December 9, 2013
I have a surprise baking buddy.

A good man

December 8, 2013
What a good man I have.

Ward Christmas Party

December 7, 2013
I took the kids to the Ward Christmas party tonight while Jeff - crazy Aggie fan that he is - drove through the snowstorm to Logan for the basketball game.

Now before you go judging me for my, well judging, know that I have planned two Ward Christmas parties before. And my job requires planning large meetings, press conferences, etc. But to be blunt honest, the party sucked. The church was FREEZING! I get used to our old church not being warm in the winter or cool in the summer but this was a new low... literally. I ate dinner with my coat and gloves on and was still shivering. Had we not been in a blizzard at the time or the kids excited for Santa, I would have gone back home. The food was the typical nasty, bland ham, baked potato, roll, and a few sparse "Mormon" jello salads. Not even funeral potatoes. Ick. And Santa was only an hour late, which meant there was a gym of freezing cold toddlers and kids running like wild monkeys trying to keep themselves entertained. Sweet.

I was half-tempted to volunteer to plan next year's party.

Gym of Balloons

December 6, 2013
Had I known Pearl's after school program was going to have a gym full of balloons I would have ran a few errands before picking her up... "Oh Mom! I don't want to leave yet!"

Hide the Lizard

December 5, 2013
Better hurry home Jeff... the lizards are hungry!

Hide the Lizard

December 4, 2013
Since June, Jeff has been hiding these little toy lizards in my pillowcase, bras, undies, socks, cooking supplies, and now makeup. It's a little game we have... he hides them, I find them in random places, and then I hide them for him to find. But since I starting documenting the #hidethelizard Jeff has really stepped up his game. If I outlive him, I will hide one in his coffin!

T.V. Station Visit

December 3, 2013
Pearl had a rough end of the day at school so to try and cheer her up with something "cool" I had her tag along with me for my interview on KUTV 2news. I thought she might think a T.V. station was pretty neat. She was less than amused... especially after learning this is not a T.V. station where they make cartoons.

Oh Blu

December 2, 2013
Poor Blu. She's the only one who didn't get yelled at or threatened with not having Christmas this morning and yet she's the one who got sent outside in the snow.

Hide the Lizard

December 1, 2013
Jeff got me good with this one. I went to get a scoop of flour to make bread sticks and nearly peed my pants! I thought it was a dead mouse at first!

Mountain Division Champions

November 30, 2013
And with that we are Mountain Division Champions.

Hide the Lizard

November 29, 2013
Ahhh! The lizards are following me everywhere! My mom said she found this little guy a long time ago and he's been sitting on her microwave waiting for someone to claim him.

Blu

November 28, 2013
I'm not really sure what or who Blu is hoping to see out the front window.

Frozen

November 27, 2013
I spent all of my money on popcorn and a movie I've never heard of before... just so I could avoid cleaning the house!

But it was worth it. The kids got their popcorn fix and we all enjoyed a fantastic movie, Disney's Frozen. Hopefully Jeff agrees when he gets home and sees the mess is still there.

1st Grade Thanksgiving Feast

November 26, 2013
Today was Pearl's 1st Grade Thanksgiving Feast at school. Everyone was assigned a food group to share with their classmates. Pearl was assigned a fruit or vegetable. We picked a bag of peas. The kids were also encouraged to dress up as a pilgrim or an Indian for the day. Luckily, Grandma had an Indian costume we could borrow.

You can tell she's thrilled at my insistence that we document this fun day.

Hide the Lizard

November 25, 2013
Perhaps you could tell me why I found a lizard in my dryer, Jeff.

Don't Get Muffled in the Gunk

November 24, 2013
Awesome object lesson in Young Women's today. Our spirits - the marble - get thrown into an immature, carnal, and selfish but amazing and beautiful body - the jar - and does everything it can to talk to us by rattling around inside. When we're healthy... physically, spiritually, mentally, and financially.... we can easily hear our Spirit whispering (or rattling around in the jar) to us. But when we let all the gunk - the rice - fill up our bodies (like not getting enough sleep or neglecting prayer and scripture study as examples) our spirits get muffled in the gunk and we can't hear promptings as well anymore.

Really hit home to me... thanks Sariah!

Mom Fail

November 22, 2013
Kids want to watch Star Wars V and eat popcorn for dinner? Sure. Why not?

Mom fail.

Severe Weather Alert

November 21, 2013
I hate wind storms. Like terrified and begging Jeff to hold me. And to top it off, our furnace went out tonight. A creaky 113-year-old house with no insulation and a giant pine tree ready to topple on our garage... um yeah. I won't be getting any sleep tonight.

YW in Excellence

November 20, 2013
"Many ordinary, individual brushstrokes work together to create a
captivating and beautiful painting."
David A. Bednar

I love my Young Women! I love seeing all the many, beautiful, awesome talents God has given them! I love serving them and with my other leaders! And who wouldn't love these adorable paintbrush-inspired Rice Krispie treats?

Reflections Contest

November 19, 2013
We went to Pearl's school tonight for an art show. Each kid who entered the Reflections contest had their artwork on display. Pearl did a Claude Monet inspired painting of a sunset. She learned about Claude Monet in her art class and was really drawn to his technique of painting with tiny dots.

Personally, and putting my mom bias aside, she should have won.

Thanksgiving Day Feast

November 18, 2013
Annual Thanksgiving Day Feast at Fern's daycare.

It was really weird not having Pearl there. Or Jeff (he had another appointment at the same time). Makes me sad that she's growing up and not here with us.

Pearl's blog

November 17, 2013
"Mom can we pleassssse update my blog!?"

Yes, Pearl. We can finally update your blog.

Popcorn Beggar

November 15, 2013
Blu knows that if she stares at Cole long enough (and drools enough) he will eventually toss her some popcorn.

30th birthday

November 14, 2013
I just love these ladies!

Today my office celebrated our 30th anniversary. We have a bit of a reputation for not only the gross and gruesome, but everyone knows we throw the BEST parties! We've spent months planning an open house to celebrate all of the accomplishments in the field of violence and injury prevention. I also coordinated a press conference - hence the reason I'm not sporting our new VIPP tee-shirts - and helped with a giant 15 ft. timeline which served as the backdrop for the press conference.

It was a lot of fun and a lot of hard work.

My boss better not up and retire now! We still think she has 30 more years in her.

Food Bank

November 13, 2013
Every year we take our youth group to the local Food Bank to help sort, package, and sort. Everything at our local food bank is done by volunteers. The kids love it. I love it. It's really fun doing something that you know is so desperately needed. And pretty humbling.

Lazy Bum

November 12, 2013
This is why I am never on time to work or church or anywhere in the morning. Of course I looked pretty much the same 10 minutes prior.

Lazy bum. I mean bums.
